As we approach the mid-point in our semester, I can’t help but think about how quickly so much time has passed. The course has been extremely informative on aspects ranging from visual rhetoric, imagery, typography, visual design, communicative design principles, and there effects on our lives as social beings. The last few months have taught me about the various design principles and communicative aspects of advertising and the role of visuals on how we see the world.
One of the aspects of the course I found to be interesting was how visual design and aspects of color psychology and visual rhetoric play a role in advertising and campaigning certain products and items. For instance, products and advertisements that showcase bright colors, relatable themes, and attractive visuals draw the viewer in. In the same vein, the fundamental principles of communication in visual communication through the usage of metaphors and symbols function to draw in their viewers and send a message of sorts.
For instance, imagery on novels and posters showcases a story that is meant to attract consumers to read, purchase, and interact with.
I added these two visual works to show the importance of symbolic language and visuals. The first work showcases the Handmaid’s Tale, without even knowing of the sinister dystopian storyline the visual symmetry, bright red color, positioning of her hands folded in a prayer like position, and font gives away and pulls viewers in to this clearly eerie show. On the other hand, the second cover which is of a novel, by the language and visuals show that this work may relate to mental illness. The imagery of red birds flying around a women who is shielding herself with the letters illness above her head, encapsulate a storyline of some sort of struggle.
All in all, the course has so far been insightful in various aspects of design, communication, and principles of visual design.
Love the additions at the bottom! I definitely agree. I think many of us have been informed about the many visual communication branches that we might not have known before. Speaking for myself, before this class I had no idea typography was a form of visual communication. I also didn't know there was actual analysis behind it I just mentally connected them to moods or personality traits sometimes.
Hey Jennifer,
I definitely agree with you, the semester did fly by very quick. I learned so much from this class in such a short period of time, it's incredible! I especially enjoyed the conversations that took place in class because I really got to see what everyone's opinions were on a certain topic. I completely agree with what you said in your article regarding the importance of symbolic language in visuals.
This semester has flew by. We have learned so much content and interesting content from visual, imagery and typography. The many ways we learn about communication is unreal. Can't wait to see the other ways communication can be seen.
Hi! This semester has flown past us before we even realized so crazy we only have a few weeks left. This class will leave a huge impression on me! Especially the topics on typography and visual communications, I completely agree that it plays a HUGE role in advertising and what draws the viewer's attention. Love the two examples you used as well! Each design has a purpose, and it takes much effort to put together and successfully do.
I love your mid semester reflection because of how much I agree with the points you've made and how much I can relate to the same lessons standing out for me. I am a communications major so my favorite lessons have been the ones in advertising and marketing. Specifically the color psychology lessons were super interesting. I don't think I had previously paid so much attention to the way color effects advertisements but it really does! The Handmaids Tale is actually an excellent example of this. Like Janice had previously said, I didn't know what the red robes and white bonnets were about. I recently started watching The Handmaids Tale a couple months ago and would be lying if I…
